The London Nightlife Guide
Everything you need to know about guestlists, table bookings, dress codes and getting the most from London's top clubs.
How London Nightlife Works
London's top nightclubs operate differently from most cities. Almost every venue works through a promoter system β which means who you know (or go through) determines your experience.
Guestlist vs. Table Booking
Guestlist β Free or reduced entry if you're on a promoter's list before the deadline (usually midnight on the day). Typically free for girls before midnight, reduced for guys. You arrive, give your name and get in. No minimum spend required.
Table Booking β You reserve a VIP booth or table with a minimum spend on bottles. Tables range from Β£500 at smaller venues to Β£5,000+ at top Mayfair clubs on peak nights. In return: dedicated seating, mixers, ice, and priority service all night.
Choosing the Right Venue
- Music first. Pick the night for the music, not just the name. A Mayfair club on the wrong promoter's night is worse than a Soho venue on the right one.
- Group composition matters. Mixed groups have the easiest access. All-male groups face the toughest door policies β balance your group where possible.
- Occasion type. Birthdays β table booking always. First night out β guestlist is fine. Corporate entertaining β private dining or a table.
- Budget honestly. A Β£1,500 minimum spend splits 6 ways is Β£250 each β roughly what you'd spend on entry + bottles anyway at a top venue.
Dress Code by Venue
Smart/elegant. Men: tailored trousers, smart shoes, dress shirt or blazer. No trainers, no sportswear. Women: cocktail dress or smart separates.
Creative/fashion-forward. Expression welcomed. No sportswear or caps. The Box is theatrical β bold outfits encouraged.
Smart-casual to formal. Reign operates as a showclub β dress to impress. No jeans or casual trainers after 10pm.
Restaurant-clubs with strict dress codes. Smart dress required throughout. Trainers and casual wear refused regardless of reservation.
Timing & Arrival
London clubs run late. Most don't fill until 12:30β1am. If you're on a guestlist, aim to arrive before midnight for best results. Table bookings can arrive from 11pm β your table is held for you.
Clubs typically run until 3am (Mayfair) to 4am (Soho/Cirque) on Saturdays. Ministry of Sound runs until 6am+.
Birthdays & Celebrations
Table bookings come with perks for celebrations: sparklers, birthday cake arrangement (some venues), personalised menus, and a dedicated host. Always mention the occasion when booking β it costs nothing and unlocks extras.
For groups of 10+, split tables across two adjacent booths rather than one large table β you'll have more space and better service.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the guestlist really free?
For women, usually yes β free entry before a certain time (typically midnight). For men, usually a reduced entry fee vs. the door price. VIPListed charges no booking fee on top of this.
What's the minimum spend for a table?
Ranges from Β£500 at smaller venues to Β£5,000+ at flagship Mayfair clubs on Saturday. A typical Saturday table at Tape London starts from Β£1,500. This covers your bottles and mixers β no hidden charges.
Can I add my all-male group to a guestlist?
Some nights yes, some no β it depends on venue policy and night. We always advise honestly. Table booking is strongly recommended for all-male groups at Mayfair venues.
How far in advance should I book?
For guestlist: same day or day before is fine. For table booking: 48β72 hours gives the best choice of tables. For birthdays and special occasions, 1 week+ is ideal.
